A knit is a generalisation of a braid. It allows strands to turn around and return at critical points.
This talk generalities this to 2-dimensional surfaces.
It seems like Kamada has to do with this.
We can define something called a pairing, where we pair two critical point s.t. the curves at the critical points connect outwards and the smooth line connecting the points does not have a critical point itself.
Now we generalize to surfaces. The strands becom surfaces in 4-space. The critical points become either a fold of the ssurface or a point where a surface intersects itself. We can define a pairing similarly. We look at two planes which fold away from each other and connect them with a third plane.
